Mailchimp delete vs archive contacts: which one lowers your bill

Run the free audit — browser-only, nothing uploaded

Short answer: to reduce billable contacts, archive. Mailchimp says archived contacts don't count toward your billing tier and keep their data (Archive or Unarchive Your Contacts). Delete permanently removes personal information and cannot be undone; Mailchimp recommends delete for GDPR (and similar) requests only (Delete Contacts).

Why delete is the wrong bill-cutting tool

Billing caveat: peak still rules this period

Mailchimp calculates the monthly bill from your plan tier and the peak contact total during the billing period. Archiving (or deleting) after you already hit a peak does not lower this month's bill; it can lower future periods (About Additional Charges). Details: peak contact total and additional charges.

Practical playbook

  1. Export first (Audience → Export audience). Mailchimp tells you to export before bulk deletes because recovery is impossible (source).
  2. Archive unsubscribed / inactive / duplicate copies you don't need for ads or transactional mail. Guides: archive unsubscribed in bulk, archive inactive contacts, duplicates across audiences.
  3. Delete only when someone asked for erasure under privacy law, or Mailchimp emailed you a GDPR notice (you then have 30 days to delete from every audience and connected integrations) (source).

See what you could archive first

AudienceTrim's free audit reads audience export ZIPs in your browser (nothing uploaded) and counts unsubscribed, non-subscribed and cross-audience duplicates — the usual archive candidates — without touching Mailchimp.

FAQ

Does archiving contacts lower my Mailchimp bill? Archived contacts don't count toward your billing tier, but Mailchimp bills on the peak contact total in the current period, so the save usually shows up in later billing periods.

Should I delete contacts to save money on Mailchimp? No. Mailchimp recommends archiving to reduce contact count without losing data. Use delete for GDPR/CCPA-style removal requests.

Can I re-import a deleted Mailchimp contact? No. Mailchimp says you can't add a deleted contact back except if they rejoin through the hosted Mailchimp signup form.

Is archiving enough for a GDPR erase request? No. Mailchimp says archiving is not a legal substitute for deletion; permanently delete the contact from every audience.
