Mailchimp peak contact total & additional charges explained

Two Mailchimp billing rules surprise people who just archived a big list: the bill uses your peak contact total for the period, and going over your chosen contact limit adds add-on contact blocks instead of cutting you off (About Additional Charges).

Peak contact total

Mailchimp: "We calculate your monthly bill based on your feature plan and pricing tier, as well as the peak contact total during your billing period. This means that even if your contact total decreases, your bill will reflect the highest number of contacts stored in your account that month." (source)

Add-on contact blocks

When you pick a paid monthly plan you also pick how many contacts you want to store — that choice is your pricing tier and send limit. Archived and cleaned contacts don't count toward that limit (source).

If contacts or sends go above the tier, Mailchimp does not pause the account; it charges for smaller add-on contact blocks. Go further over and you pay for multiple blocks. Block size and price depend on plan and tier; when logged in at the contact-limit setting, Mailchimp shows the included contacts/sends and add-on sizes (source).

Example from Mailchimp: on Standard, the email send limit is 12× your contact limit; the same ratio applies to add-on blocks (e.g. 1,000 extra contacts → 12,000 extra sends) (source).

What actually counts toward the limit

Mailchimp's own fixes when you see extra charges

  1. Raise the contact limit to the right tier to avoid recurring add-on fees, or
  2. Segment contacts who aren't opening or buying and archive inactive contacts (source)
  3. Send to smaller segments instead of the whole subscribed list (source)
  4. Also clear unsubscribed / careful non-subscribed / cross-audience duplicates — see the related guides below
  5. If you plan to change pricing tiers, finish archiving first; downgrades start next cycle

FAQ

Why didn't my Mailchimp bill drop after I archived contacts? Mailchimp bills on the peak contact total during the billing period, so a high watermark already reached this month still drives this bill.

What is a Mailchimp add-on contact block? An extra, smaller set of contacts (and matching sends) Mailchimp charges when you exceed your chosen contact or send limit, instead of interrupting service.

Do archived contacts count toward Mailchimp's contact limit? No. Archived and cleaned contacts don't count toward your contact limit.

How do I avoid Mailchimp additional charges next month? Keep your contact total under your tier for a full billing cycle: archive inactive, unsubscribed, and duplicate-across-audience contacts, or raise the tier if growth is permanent.
