How to archive unsubscribed contacts in Mailchimp in bulk
Run the free audit — browser-only, nothing uploaded
Why bother: on current Mailchimp plans, subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts are all included in your contact count (About Mailchimp Pricing Plans). Archived contacts don't count toward your billing tier (Archive or Unarchive Your Contacts). Unsubscribed contacts can't receive marketing emails anyway; they can only receive ads and transactional emails (About Your Contacts).
Step 1: show only the unsubscribed contacts
- Click Audience. If you have more than one audience, pick it from the Audience drop-down.
- Click the Subscription status drop-down, then click Email unsubscribed.
- Optional but recommended: click Save as segment, and export the segment to a CSV so you have a copy of who you archived.

Step 2: select all and archive
- In the segment view, check the box in the table header to select every contact in the segment.
- If Mailchimp asks, click Select all [X] contacts so the selection covers more than the visible page.
- Click Actions, then Archive.
- Type ARCHIVE in the pop-up and click Archive. Large lists can take a few minutes.

Step 3: repeat in every audience
Archiving works one audience at a time. Mailchimp notes that if a contact appears in more than one audience, you need to archive them from each audience (source). The same person in two audiences is also billed as two people (About Duplicate Contacts); see duplicate contacts across audiences.
What archiving changes, and what it doesn't
- Data is kept. Archived contacts move to a separate archived contacts table. Their data is preserved, including in email reports, and you can unarchive them at any time (source).
- They can't receive anything while archived: no marketing, and per Mailchimp's contact table, no ads or transactional emails either (About Your Contacts). If you use unsubscribed contacts in ad audiences, decide that before archiving.
- They can come back on their own. A contact unarchives themselves if they sign up through your Mailchimp signup form or interact with your connected online store (source).
- This billing period's peak stays. Mailchimp bills on the peak contact total during the billing period, so the bill reflects the highest number stored that month even if the total later drops (About Additional Charges). Archiving lowers future periods, not one already reached.
- Not a GDPR deletion. Mailchimp says archiving isn't a legal substitute for deletion; if an EU contact asks to be removed, delete them (source).
Know the number before you start
AudienceTrim's free audit reads your Mailchimp audience exports in your browser (nothing is uploaded) and shows how many unsubscribed, non-subscribed and cross-audience duplicate contacts are in each audience, so you know how many billed contacts you can archive before you touch anything.
