Does Mailchimp charge for unsubscribed contacts?

Short answer: yes, on current plans. Mailchimp's help center says subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts are all included in your contact count, while archived, cleaned and deleted contacts are not (About Mailchimp Pricing Plans). Some older legacy plans were billed differently, so check your plan on the Billing page.

Why it adds up

Every unsubscribe stays in your audience and keeps counting until someone archives it. Mailchimp has no setting to archive unsubscribes automatically, so many accounts slowly pay for a growing pile of people they can't email. Ecommerce stores also collect non-subscribed contacts from checkouts, and those count too (more on non-subscribed contacts).

How to stop paying for them

  1. In each audience, create a segment: Email marketing status is unsubscribed.
  2. Select all contacts in the segment, then Actions → Archive, and type ARCHIVE to confirm (Mailchimp guide).
  3. Repeat in every audience. Archived contacts keep their data and can be unarchived later. Full walkthrough: archive unsubscribed contacts in bulk.
  4. Your next billing period uses the lower count. Archiving doesn't reduce a peak already reached this period.

If you use unsubscribed contacts for postcards or ad audiences, keep them. Archiving removes them from those tools too.

Check how much you're overpaying, privately

AudienceTrim's free audit reads your audience exports in your browser (nothing is uploaded) and counts unsubscribed, non-subscribed and cross-audience duplicate contacts, so you see exactly how many billed contacts you could archive.
