Your Mailchimp plan is priced on contacts, not subscribers. Mailchimp defines your contact total as the number of contacts stored across all of your audiences, and subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts are all included in your contact count (About Mailchimp Pricing Plans). So the number you pay for is usually bigger than the number of people you can email.
What doesn't count: cleaned, pending, archived and deleted contacts (About Your Contacts). Pending contacts aren't added to your audience until they confirm, and they're deleted after 60 days if they don't (same source). Legacy paid plans created before May 15, 2019 may follow different contact-limit rules (same source).
An audience export may include a ZIP file with separate CSV files for each type of email contact: subscribed, unsubscribed, non-subscribed and cleaned (View or Export Your Contacts). Drop one ZIP per audience into AudienceTrim's free audit and it shows, in your browser, how many billed contacts are unsubscribed, non-subscribed, or the same email in more than one audience. Nothing is uploaded. See also what's in the export ZIP.
Does Mailchimp charge for subscribers or for contacts? For contacts. Subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts across all your audiences make up the contact total your plan is priced on.
Why do some Mailchimp contacts have no badge in the Email Marketing column? Those are non-subscribed contacts: people who interacted with you but never opted in to marketing. They still count toward your contact limit.
Do pending or cleaned contacts count toward my Mailchimp contact limit? No. Cleaned, pending, archived and deleted contacts don't count.
Does the same email in two Mailchimp audiences count twice? Yes. Mailchimp doesn't check for duplicates across audiences, so the same email in two audiences is two contacts.
