Duplicate contacts across Mailchimp audiences

Run the free audit — browser-only, nothing uploaded

Mailchimp removes duplicates within an audience, but not across audiences: "If the same person's email is in two audiences, we see that as two people. This could contribute to your monthly bill." (Mailchimp: About Duplicate Contacts). Standard plans allow up to 5 audiences and Premium allows unlimited (pricing), so overlap is common.

Mailchimp's suggested fix

Mailchimp recommends one primary audience organized with tags or groups. To get there you export every audience, back up, archive, and re-import with tags (combine audiences guide). If you keep separate audiences, the fallback is to merge exports in Excel, find duplicates by hand, and archive them audience by audience.

The faster way

  1. Export each audience (Audience → Export audience). You get one ZIP per audience.
  2. Drop all the ZIPs into AudienceTrim. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
  3. See how many billed contacts are duplicates and which audience keeps each person. AudienceTrim keeps the subscribed copy and prefers your primary audience.
  4. Pro: download an archive list per audience, or one combined file with from:audience tags ready for a single-audience import.
