Why did my Mailchimp bill go up? 8 things to check

Mailchimp calculates your monthly bill from your feature plan and pricing tier, plus the peak contact total during your billing period (About Additional Charges). If your contact total or send count goes over your plan's limit, Mailchimp doesn't interrupt your service; you see an additional charge on your bill instead (source). Work through the list below to find which one hit you.

The checklist

  1. You went over your contact limit. Going over the contact or send limit for your tier adds an add-on contact block, and going further over adds multiple blocks. Block price and size depend on your plan and tier (source). Charges are assessed month by month, based on your billing cycle (About Mailchimp Pricing Tiers).
  2. You went over your send limit. The monthly send limit is 10 times your contact limit on Essentials, 12 times on Standard and 15 times on Premium. Test and transactional emails count toward it (About Mailchimp Pricing Plans). More in how the monthly send limit works.
  3. A short spike set the peak. Even if your contact total drops, the bill reflects the highest number of contacts stored in your account that month (source). A big import you archived a week later still counts for that cycle. See peak contact total.
  4. A store or integration added non-subscribed contacts. Non-subscribed contacts commonly arrive through a connected online store, an integration, a manual import, or an email forwarded to your Mailchimp Inbox, and they count toward your monthly contact limit (About Non-Subscribed Contacts).
  5. Unsubscribed contacts are still stored. Unsubscribed contacts can't receive marketing emails but still count toward your monthly contact limit (About Your Contacts).
  6. The same people sit in two audiences. Mailchimp doesn't check for duplicates across audiences: "If the same person's email is in two audiences, we see that as two people" (About Duplicate Contacts).
  7. Archived contacts came back. A contact can unarchive themselves by signing up through your Mailchimp signup form or interacting with your connected online store, and importing archived contacts unarchives them automatically (Archive or Unarchive Your Contacts).
  8. Someone upgraded mid-cycle. Upgrading to a higher pricing tier is an immediate charge for the difference between tiers; upgrading to a higher plan type is an immediate prorated charge, then the full price on the next billing date (Change or Pause Your Marketing Plan).

Where to look: the Account Overview page shows how close you are to your contact limits and your monthly billing date (source). Legacy plans: additional charges came with the pricing model introduced on May 15, 2019, and paid accounts from before then aren't affected (source).

FAQ

Why is there an additional charge on my Mailchimp bill? Your contact total or send count went over the limit of your pricing tier. Mailchimp doesn't interrupt service; it charges for one or more add-on contact blocks instead.

Why didn't my Mailchimp bill go down after I archived contacts? Mailchimp bills on the peak contact total during the billing period, so the highest count stored that month still sets the bill. Keep the lower total for a full billing cycle.

Do unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts raise my Mailchimp bill? Yes. Both count toward your monthly contact limit. Archived, cleaned and deleted contacts don't.

Can archived Mailchimp contacts start counting again? Yes. A contact can unarchive themselves by signing up through your signup form or interacting with your connected store, and importing archived contacts unarchives them.
