Paying for unengaged Mailchimp contacts: what still counts

Run the free audit — browser-only, nothing uploaded

"Unengaged" isn't a Mailchimp billing status. On current plans, what you pay for is the contact total: subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts count; archived, cleaned and deleted contacts don't (About Mailchimp Pricing Plans). Plenty of contacts you never email — or who never open — still sit in those billable groups.

Which contacts can raise the bill even when nobody opens

Cleaned contacts are different. Hard bounces and repeated soft bounces become cleaned contacts and don't count toward audience limits (About Cleaned Contacts). Archiving cleaned contacts will not reduce your contact count for billing (source). Comparison: cleaned vs archived vs unsubscribed.

What archiving does (and doesn't) change

Archived contacts are removed from the contact table, keep their data, and don't count toward your billing tier (Archive or Unarchive Your Contacts). Mailchimp notes archiving is useful for duplicate, outdated, or inactive contacts who haven't interacted with your marketing (source).

Because the monthly bill also uses the peak contact total during the billing period, archiving mid-cycle may leave this month's bill unchanged even when the live count drops (About Additional Charges). Plan the cleanup against your billing date: audience cleanup before your next billing date.

A short checklist

  1. On Account Overview, note your contact limit and monthly billing date (About Mailchimp Pricing Tiers).
  2. Export each audience (View or Export Your Contacts).
  3. Archive unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts you don't need; segment and archive inactive subscribed contacts.
  4. Keep the lower total through a full billing cycle if you want the next bill to reflect it (About Mailchimp Pricing Plans).

Count the billable groups from your exports

AudienceTrim's free audit runs in your browser on the export ZIPs. It shows unsubscribed, non-subscribed and cross-audience duplicates — the groups that often explain a contact total higher than the people you still email. Nothing is uploaded.

FAQ

Do I pay for Mailchimp contacts who never open emails? Subscribed contacts count toward your contact total whether or not they engage. Mailchimp suggests segmenting contacts who aren't interacting and archiving them to reduce billable contacts.

Do unsubscribed Mailchimp contacts still count if they never engage? Yes. Unsubscribed contacts can't receive marketing emails but still count toward your monthly contact limit until you archive or delete them.

Will archiving inactive contacts lower this month's Mailchimp bill? Not necessarily. The bill uses the peak contact total during the billing period, so a late archive may only help the next cycle.

Do cleaned (bounced) contacts count as unengaged contacts I pay for? No. Cleaned contacts don't count toward audience limits. Archiving them does not reduce your contact count for billing.
